Older Drivers

Drivers aged over 70 tend to be some of the safest on the road due to their experience of driving over many years...

A person's health, including failing eyesight and side effects from medication, can affect their ability to handle a vehicle.

There is no age restriction on holding a driving licence but when your licence expires, when you turn 70, you will need to renew it, if you wish to carry on driving.

If you develop any of the following conditions then you must tell the DVLA as this could affect your ability to drive safely. The conditions are:

    • epilepsy
    • strokes
    • other neurological and mental health conditions
    • physical disabilities
    • visual impairments

If you fail to notify the DVLA, you can be fined up to £1,000.

To make driving a more pleasurable experience, as you get older, you could make alterations to your car including the use of ramps for getting in and out of your car, to modifying the driver's seat to make it more comfortable. Having regular medical assessments could also give you peace of mind.
