Motorists are being advised to have "regular eye tests" to check they’re not a risk on the road.
The DVLA says drivers must have an "adequate field of vision"
The rules state that motorists must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres with glasses or contact lenses.
A quick way to do this is to work out what 20 metres looks like at the roadside which is typically the length of five cars parked next to each other.
then to test yourself on whether you can clearly read the number plate on the car furthest away.
Drivers found not to meet the minimum eyesight requirements can face hefty penalties.
These range from a £1,000 fine, three penalty points on a driving licence and even a driving ban.
The police and the DVLA can also have a licence revoked with immediate effect if a driver is considered to be a risk.
Eyesight naturally deteriorates over time and if you are concerned about their eyesight you are advised to have a check-up with an optician.
