Fire Service Changes

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is working on a ‘change programme’ to enable it to meet significant financial challenges in the next financial year.

The service needs to save £3 million to set a balanced budget starting in April with further savings needed in the following three to four years.

To meet these challenges, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has developed a target operating model to identify how it can become more efficient while keeping people safe in emergencies.

    Areas under review are:

    • the number of whole-time firefighters
    • changes in shift patterns
    • pay to on-call firefighter
    • changes to the service’s specialist rescue capability

The plan has been endorsed by the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority and the papers can be found on the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue website.

Further work will now continue to gather information and work with colleagues and other stakeholders before final decisions are made.
