Food Bank for Castle Cary.

It is hoped that the site currently housing public conveniences at Millbrook Gardens in Castle Cary could be redeveloped into space where local shops can donate soon-to-be out-of-date food.

The vision also includes space available to let out for a new business.

Castle Cary Town Council took on the long lease of the Millbrook Toilets from South Somerset District Council in 2017. The Town Council has now submitted a planning application to change the use of the location from community use to community and commercial use.

A planning statement reads: "We wish to use the former ladies and gentleman's toilets as a community larder and a space to let out for a new business for people who have been affected by Covid. The community larder will complement the pandemic response in the town and will store and provide pre-packed food boxes for people accessing this new service".

"The local shops have committed to providing their soon-to-be out-of-date food and Morrisons in Wincanton will supply tins and packets of food.
"The Newt has also promised to support the project."

The statement adds: "This is essentially a food saving project and will also address the needs of families who are not aware of the food box scheme.
"The scheme will be discreet and will have lots of signposting information available. Trained volunteers will be able to chat, support and provide the food three times a week."
