Headlights

Experts have warned that motorists are at risk of a fine of £1,000 for flashing their headlights at other drivers.

To avoid the fine, motorists need to be aware of Rules 110 and 111 of the Highway Code, which states that headlights must not be flashed to convey messages or signal other drivers.

It says by flashing headlights to signal other road users, drivers are not only breaking the rules but putting their safety at risk, as the improper use of headlights can lead to confusion on the road.

Section 89 of the Police Act 1997 also makes it clear that motorists face legal action if they’re found to be obstructing a police officer in their duties, with drivers not realising that warning others of speed checks or police presence by flashing their headlights can be seen as an obstruction.

It’s vital to use headlights responsibly, especially in low-visibility conditions. A simple headlight check can ensure you are not unintentionally dazzling other road users or creating dangerous driving conditions.
