The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency has revealed the top reasons learner drivers fail their driving tests. These are the most common pitfalls.
- Not making effective observations at junctions. They say drivers must always make effective observations before moving into a new road, to make sure that it’s safe to do so.
- Not using mirrors correctly when changing direction. They say drivers must make full use of their mirrors before signalling to change direction or change speed,
- Not moving off safely. They say drivers must be able to move off safely while making the correct observations from the side of the road, on a slope or hill, and from behind a parked vehicle.
Other common errors are:
- Incorrect positioning when turning right at junctions
- Not having proper control of the steering
- Not responding appropriately to traffic lights
- Not keeping control of the vehicle while reverse parking
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency says learner drivers should discuss these examples with their driving instructor, and that only when they have stopped making these mistakes, should they take a driving test.
