Safeguarding Assurance for Yeovil Golfers

When golf resumes at Yeovil Golf Club, players can be assured that the Club is not only complying with the current Covid Regulations but has also been awarded SafeGolf Club accreditation from England Golf.

When golf resumes at Yeovil Golf Club on the 29th March, members and green fee players can be assured that the Club is not only complying with the current Covid Regulations but has also been awarded SafeGolf Club accreditation from England Golf.

Yeovil Golf Club which is situated on the border between Dorset and Somerset is a private member club with two parkland golf courses (the 18-hole Old Course and the 9-hole Newton Course) and a floodlight covered driving range.

In addition to providing competitions and social events for its members the club also caters for visiting societies and green fee players; and has just received SafeGolf accreditation - demonstrating the club’s commitment to safeguarding children and young people, as well as adults in risk in the sport of golf.

The club’s initiatives to attract new golfers, such as the Get Into Golf programme, have had to be suspended due the latest Covid lockdown but these will be reintroduced in a safe manner as restrictions are eased.

Chris Huggins, the Club’s General Manager who led the club’s push to SafeGolf, said: “Yeovil is a great club, it’s very friendly, welcoming, and forward-thinking. This award helps us to spread that message and to tell people that children are safe and secure here and that we understand about beginner golfers".

The award was presented to Yeovil Golf Club by Tom Jessamine, their England Golf Club Support Officer.  “I’m delighted that Yeovil has achieved SafeGolf and that its efforts to grow the game can be nationally recognised.”

SafeGolf is primarily a website that can be accessed at www.safegolf.org at which anyone with a concern about the welfare of a player, or the behaviour or practice of a coach, volunteer, organiser, parent, or a player, can contact the lead safeguarding officer at their national governing body.

Club Captain Keith Funnell explained that “Achieving SafeGolf accreditation provides additional assurance to parents that Yeovil Golf Club provides a safe and positive experience to children and young people whilst playing golf. It is also a standard the PGA apply to our team of   professional coaches.”
