    Fines are being increased at schools in Somerset for parents who take their children out of school without permission. The penalties will go up by twenty pounds to eighty pounds from September. The government is asking schools to issue fines after five days of continued absence.
     
    Residents in Dean near Shepton Mallet have been clearing up after a major flood event. Several homes were left under-water following heavy rain earlier this week.

    Holyrood Academy in Chard has come to the aid of a local karate club whose premises were destroyed in a fire. Chard Tae Kwon-do club lost its training base in last weekend’s major blaze in Leach Road. Members have been told they can train at Holyrood Academy until further notice.

    Wells Cathedral has announced that visitors will soon have to pay to look around the historic building. At the moment, visitors are asked to make a donation but from April 22nd they’ll have to pay fourteen pounds with their tickets allowing any number of re-visits within twelve months.

    Some of Somerset’s famous landmarks are being celebrated in a new Channel Five TV series. The first episode of 'Somerset: Wonder of the West Country' was shown last night and featured the West Somerset Steam Railway and holiday lets in Watchet.
