Work has started on the major upgrade of the Triangle in lower Middle Street in Yeovil town centre. The work, part of the South Somerset District Council Yeovil Refresh project, will see a raised stage area with amphitheatre seating created in place of the bandstand, a big TV screen and water feature installed and new trees planted. Wessex Water is currently excavating the site and diverting the water main in the area. The work is being carried out by South West Highways who recently completed the improvement works to Wine Street in Yeovil town centre.

A former nursing home at Langport with development potential has been put up for sale. The Grange Nursing Home is advertised together with gardens measuring 4.2 acres. South Somerset District Council has been asked to grant permission to build 24 new homes on the site.

Somerset has won a share of one million pounds of government funding to provide skills training to people who are self-employed and those looking for work. People in those categories who want to develop new skills are being offered places on 16-week intensive courses in subjects such as Cyber Security and Digital Marketing. The sessions are being provided by Train4Tomorrow and begin next month.

Somerset Waste Partnership is planning to replace 22 of its bin lorries at a cost of five and a half million pounds. SWP says the vehicles regularly experience mechanical problems that result in missed collections. Under the proposals, ten of the lorries will be replaced with electric vehicles.

A Yeovil man has been jailed after pleading guilty to stealing two motor vehicles. Taunton Crown Court was told that Mathew Barrett broke into an address in Fielding Road in Yeovil and took the keys to Audi, which he used to drive off in. He drove the car to Ilminster where it was destroyed in an accidental fire. He then broke into a property in Ilminster and took a second car, which he used to drive back to Yeovil. Barrett was jailed for 25 months and banned from driving for 30 months after pleading guilty to two counts of taking a vehicle without consent, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance along with one count of dwelling burglary.
