The bridge over the River Cam at Queen Camel on the main A359 remains closed to traffic amid concerns that the structure may have been damaged by Tuesday night’s major flooding event. A big clean up has continued in Queen Camel after homes and businesses were left under several feet of water when the River Cam burst its banks. Properties were also flooded in West Camel, Galhampton, Bruton and North and South Cadbury. A helpline has been set up for those who’s homes and businesses were hit by the floods. A campaign’s been launched to have a tunnel under the A30 at Haselbury Plucknett re-opened. The 300-year-old passageway that forms part of the Parrett Trail was closed in 2006 after a local landowner withdrew permission for the public to walk over his land. Now, Somerset Council is considering implementing a Compulsory Purchase Order to buy part of the land so that people walking the Parrett Trail can use the tunnel.
Developers wanting to convert the former White Horse Hotel in Wincanton say the "at risk" status on the building is delaying work on the project. Planning permission has been granted to turn the property into a shop and flats but the architect behind the project, Stuart Hall, says until the “at risk” status has been removed work can’t start.
