Dozens of events are taking place across South Somerset today to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. In towns and villages almost everywhere, Town Criers will be out reading proclamations and church bells will ring out.

In Yeovil, there’s an event on the Green in front of St John’s Church in the town centre this evening featuring performances by the Octagon Community Choir and HMS Heron Band. In Ilminster, a service of celebration is being held in The Minster to give thanks to Her Majesty at 7 pm.

Beacons are being lit across South Somerset at 9:45 pm this evening as part of a network of around 1500 flaming tributes to the Queen that will stretch throughout the country and around Commonwealth capitals.

Locally, you can join in with the beacon lighting in Chard at Crowshute Gardens. In Pen Selwood near Wincanton at Pear Ash Farm. In North Perrott near Crewkerne at Perrott Park and by the monument at Ham Hill Country Park. In Templecombe at the Recreation Ground. In South Cadbury at Cadbury Castle. Ilminster on Beacon Hill. Barrington at the Village Hall. In Yeovil on the Green outside St John’s Church and on top of Wyndham Hill.

If you’re taking a picnic to an outdoor event, Somerset Waste Partnership asks that you take home your waste for recycling.
