Avon and Somerset Police is to receive critical funding for 70 new officers after a revised budget for the new financial year was agreed. Police and Crime Commissioner, Sue Mountstevens had originally proposed a 6.6 per cent rise to the Police portion of the council tax but that was rejected by the Police and Crime Panel. Now, an increase 5.88 per cent has been agreed. It’ll mean an average household will pay just over 240 pounds for policing in the new financial year beginning April onwards.
An investigation has continued into the cause of yesterday’s major fire at the former NatWest Bank building in Crewkerne. The blaze started at around lunchtime yesterday with Market Street shut to traffic for more than six hours. At one point, 14 appliances were needed to tackle the flames.
New parking arrangements have been introduced in Yeovil town centre. They affect parking in Middle Street, Union Street and Peter Street. The temporary flower troughs in Middle Street outside Marks and Spencer have been moved to create more disabled parking and additional on street spaces are being provided in Peter Street. The new arrangements are being trialed for six months when a review will be held
Opposition is growing over plans to build 30 new homes in Keinton Mandeville. The development, including a new pre-school, would be on land off Church Street. According to the South Somerset District Council, 138 objections to the scheme have been registered. It’s understood the Council will make a decision on the application in April.
