South Somerset’s visitor attractions are gearing up to re-open in two weeks time when lockdown restrictions are further eased. Amongst the attractions re-opening will be the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeoviliton which displays Concorde and a collection of Naval historic aircraft.

A care home in Sherborne has joined with a national campaign aimed at having medals from the First World War returned to their rightful owners. WW1 medals, also pocket watches, photographs or books with inscriptions, and other such items where there is a possible lead to identify the original owners, are wanted as part of the ‘Medals Going Home’ campaign. If you have any items you’re asked to take them to the Trinity Manor Care Home on Bradford Road in Sherborne for giving back to their original owners.

Plans have been submitted to convert the Old Vicarage at Hambridge near Langport into a school farm. Two outdoor classrooms would also be built on the site. Also, new windows are to be fitted together with air source heat pumps at Yeovil Library to make the building more energy-efficient.

With no buyer having been found for the two former Beales sites in Yeovil town centre, the properties are now to be sold by auction. The buildings, on either side of the High Street in Yeovil, will go under the hammer in an online auction on Friday, May 28th.

A Yeovil man has appeared in court for possession of cannabis. James Bazely of Burroughes Avenue pleaded guilty to the charge together with two motoring offences and was fined a total of £400. At the same court, Ben Chainey-Lane, of Huish Episcopi, pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle after an in-take of Cannabis. Chainey-Lane was disqualified from driving for 18 months and fined £300.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme in Somerset is looking new recruits who wouldn't normally consider taking on the challenge. The initiative is aimed at attracting 100 young people not in mainstream education or linked to organisations involved with the Duke of Edinburgh awards.
