Yeovil College has been given a £30 million pounds boost. The money from the government’s FE Capital Transformation Fund will be used to re-design the college’s training restaurant, hair and beauty salon, performing arts studio, gym and sports hall. An accessible student hub and learning zone will also be built. Construction is due to begin next summer.

A decision on building 250 new homes in Chard has been deferred. Land to the south of the town, close to the A358, has been earmarked for development. South Somerset District Council has asked for more details before making a decision on the plans.

A car’s been damaged by fire in South Petherton. The vehicle burst into flames while parked in West Street on Monday. The fire service says the cause was accidental.

A Somerset GP is due to pass through Yeovil today on a sponsored walk for the homeless charity, Shelter. Dr Neil Rushton spent last night sleeping in a tent on the first leg of his 180-mile trek to London. Doctor Rushton aims to collect £10,000 for Shelter and is hoping people living along the route of his walk will turn out to support his efforts.

A Yeovil business has been given the job of building a new depot for school transport vehicles. Somerset Landscapes Ltd will convert a site in Bridgwater into a depot for school minibuses and coaches at a cost of £288,000.

Extras are wanted for a film to be made in Yeovil. Casting agency, Casting Collective is looking for men and women to work on the set of the movie but has given no further details about the project. Other scenes will be made in Lyme Regis and around South Somerset. To work on the film, you must be legally allowed to work in the UK with a National Insurance number.
